Junior Clerk & Assistant Jobs Guide 2026

Clerical posts — Junior Clerk (BS-11), Office Assistant, Stenotypist and Assistant (BS-16) — are the most frequently advertised government jobs in Pakistan, appearing in almost every PPSC, SPSC, FPSC and departmental cycle. The test format barely changes, which means one solid preparation base can be reused for years.

    Clerical & Assistant posts

Typing speed requirements, age limits and domicile restrictions vary by advertisement — some clerical posts are open only to one district's candidates. Always read the printed conditions for your case number.

  • Scales: BS-11 (Junior Clerk) to BS-16 (Assistant / Office Assistant)
  • Education: Intermediate for clerks; graduation for BS-16 posts
  • Test: One-paper MCQ (typically 100 questions / 90 minutes)
  • Skill test: Computer typing (often 30–40 wpm); shorthand for stenotypist
  • Hiring bodies: PPSC, SPSC, FPSC, KPPSC, BPSC, NTS and departments
  • Posting: District offices, boards, secretariats and attached departments
  • A typical clerical recruitment timeline

Timelines differ by commission and department. Track the official commission website for your specific advertisement.

  • Advertisement: Posts, qualification, typing requirement and syllabus published
  • Application + fee: Online form and bank challan before the closing date
  • Written MCQ test: Usually 6–12 weeks after the closing date
  • Typing / shorthand test: For shortlisted candidates after the written result
  • Interview & merit list: Documents verified, then final merit published
  • Who can apply for clerical posts?

The conditions are simple, but they are enforced strictly at scrutiny.

    Education

Junior Clerk and Office Assistant posts normally require intermediate (second division). Assistant (BS-16) posts require a second-division bachelor's degree. Stenotypist posts add a shorthand requirement.

    Typing speed

Most clerical advertisements require a computer typing speed — commonly 30 to 40 words per minute — tested separately after the MCQ paper. Some also require a six-month computer course or diploma.

    Age limits

Typically 18–25 or 18–30 with the provincial relaxation (for example 5 years for men and 8 years for women in Punjab). Age is counted on the closing date.

    Domicile & quota

Provincial domicile is required, and many clerical posts are district-specific. Women, minority and special-person quotas are stated post-wise in the advertisement.

    How clerical selection works

Four steps, and candidates most often fail at the second and third.

    Application scrutiny

Your degree, domicile, age and typing certificate must satisfy the printed conditions on the closing date. Incomplete uploads and mismatched documents are rejected without refund.

    One-paper MCQ test

A single objective paper covering English, general knowledge, Pakistan studies, Islamiat, current affairs, everyday science, basic mathematics, IQ and computer/office knowledge.

    Typing / shorthand test

Practical speed and accuracy test on a computer. Speed alone is not enough — accuracy thresholds apply, and stenotypist posts test dictation transcription.

    Interview and final merit

A short board interview confirms documents and basic suitability. Final merit is normally the written score plus the interview, as stated in the advertisement.

    Clerical one-paper syllabus

The same sections recur across commissions — this is the checklist to work through.

Grammar, prepositions, tenses, active/passive, synonyms and antonyms, spelling, idioms and short comprehension.

Pakistan movement, constitution, geography, rivers and dams, provinces, national institutions and symbols.

Pillars of Islam, Seerat-un-Nabi, Quranic basics, prominent Islamic figures and events.

Last 12 months of national and international news, appointments, agreements, sports and economy.

Human body, vitamins, units, simple physics and chemistry, environment and health.

Percentages, ratio, averages, profit and loss, time and work, series, analogies and coding-decoding.

MS Word and Excel basics, shortcut keys, email and internet terms, file handling, and office record/diary-dispatch procedure.

    A 4-week preparation plan

Enough time if you study daily and use past papers as the spine.

    Week 1–4: type every day

Start typing practice on day one, 20 minutes daily, aiming for the advertised speed with under 5% error. This is the part you cannot cram at the end.

Week 1: English + maths base

Grammar rules, 300 common synonyms/antonyms and the standard arithmetic topics. These two sections are the most predictable marks in the paper.

Week 2: GK, Pakistan studies, Islamiat

Work in themes — constitution, geography, institutions, Seerat, pillars — and revise with quick self-quizzes rather than re-reading notes.

Week 3: current affairs + science

Cover the last 12 months theme-wise and add everyday science and computer basics, including MS Office shortcuts and office procedure terms.

    Week 4: past papers only

Solve clerical one-paper past papers from your commission, log every wrong answer, and re-test the same topics two days later.

Timed mocks: 100 in 90 minutes

Do at least four full-length timed mocks. Learn to leave a hard question in 15 seconds and return only if time remains.

Which clerical post should you apply for?

Compare requirements before paying separate fees for multiple posts.

Prepare once, apply to every clerical cycle

English, general knowledge, Islamiat, current affairs, everyday science, maths and IQ MCQ practice with explanations — the exact base clerical one-paper tests reuse every year.

Add daily typing practice alongside the MCQ work from day one.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the syllabus for Junior Clerk tests?

A single MCQ paper covering English, general knowledge, Pakistan studies, Islamiat, current affairs, everyday science, basic mathematics, IQ and computer/office knowledge, followed by a typing test.

What typing speed is required for a Junior Clerk post?

Most advertisements require a computer typing speed of 30 to 40 words per minute with acceptable accuracy. The exact requirement and whether a certificate is needed is printed with the post.

What is the qualification for Assistant BS-16?

Usually a second-division bachelor's degree from a recognised university, with the age band and domicile printed in the advertisement. Some Assistant posts are restricted to a single district's domicile.

Is the Junior Clerk test difficult?

The content is intermediate level, but competition is very high because thousands apply for a handful of posts. Speed, accuracy and past-paper familiarity decide the outcome more than advanced knowledge.

How many questions are in a clerical one-paper test?

Commonly 100 MCQs in 90 minutes, though some commissions use 80 or 120 questions. Check the marking scheme and negative marking rule in your advertisement.

Do clerical tests have negative marking?

It depends on the commission and the advertisement. Where negative marking applies, only guess when you can eliminate at least one option.

How long should I prepare for a clerk test?

Four to six weeks of daily study is enough for most candidates if typing practice runs in parallel from the first day.

    Which computer topics are asked?

MS Word and Excel basics, common shortcut keys, file and folder handling, printing, email and internet terminology, plus office record keeping and diary-dispatch procedure.

Can I apply for several clerical posts at once?

Yes, if you meet the conditions for each post and submit a separate application and fee. Watch for overlapping test dates in the same cycle.

Are past papers enough to pass?

Past papers are the single most efficient resource because the sections repeat, but pair them with a topic base for English, maths and current affairs so new questions do not surprise you.

What happens after the written test?

Shortlisted candidates are called for the typing or shorthand test, then a short interview and document verification, before the final merit list is published.

Do I need a computer diploma?

Some advertisements require a six-month computer course or a typing certificate from a recognised institute. If yours does, arrange it before the closing date — it cannot be added later.
