PPSC publishes the syllabus with each advertisement. Weights below reflect the standard Assistant/Junior Clerk one-paper pattern; always check the current advertisement's syllabus panel.

  • Post: Assistant (BS-16), Punjab departments
  • Qualification: Second-class Bachelor's degree
  • Paper: 100 MCQs / 100 marks in 90 minutes
  • Qualifying mark: 40% (competitive merit is much higher)
  • Marking: Negative marking is applied by PPSC
  • Who can apply for PPSC Assistant?

The written paper is the same style for most clerical and BS-16 support posts.

    Education

A second-class Bachelor's degree from a recognised university is the standard requirement for Assistant BS-16. Junior Clerk BS-11 posts accept Intermediate with a typing speed requirement.

    Age

Typically 21–30 years for Assistant, with the usual Punjab government age relaxations for eligible categories. The exact band appears in each advertisement.

    Domicile

Punjab domicile is required, and many posts are advertised against district or regional quotas. Choose the quota you are eligible for carefully on the application form.

    Computer skills

Basic computer literacy is both an eligibility expectation and a scored section of the paper. Stenotypist and clerk posts add a separate typing or shorthand test.

    How the recruitment runs

Written score does most of the work; the interview decides the final margin.

    Online application

Apply on the PPSC portal within the advertised window, upload documents and pay the fee challan. Fill your quota, domicile and degree details exactly as on your documents.

    Roll number slip

PPSC issues the roll number slip through your portal account with the centre, date and reporting time. Print it and bring it with your original CNIC.

    One-paper MCQ test

100 questions in 90 minutes covering English, general knowledge, Pakistan Studies, Islamiat, mathematics, everyday science, computer literacy, Urdu and basic Punjab-government awareness.

    Typing / skill test (post-specific)

Junior Clerk, Stenotypist and Steno-Typist posts add a typing or shorthand speed test. Assistant BS-16 usually does not, unless the advertisement states otherwise.

    Interview & final merit

Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by a PPSC board. Final merit combines the written test score with interview marks, applied against your district or category quota.

PPSC Assistant syllabus — subject-wise marks

Standard 100-mark one-paper split used for Assistant and clerical posts.

Tenses, prepositions, articles, active and passive voice, direct/indirect narration, synonyms, antonyms, idioms, sentence correction and short comprehension.

Pakistan and world current affairs of the last year, international organisations, capitals, currencies, sports, and Punjab-specific developments.

Pakistan Movement, constitutional history, geography, rivers, provinces, population, economy and key national institutions.

Seerat-un-Nabi, Quran and Hadith basics, pillars of Islam, Khilafat-e-Rashida and important Islamic events and dates.

Percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, profit and loss, time and work, simple interest, HCF/LCM and basic algebra.

MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint basics, hardware and input/output devices, storage units, operating systems, internet, email and common shortcut keys.

Human body and nutrition, units and measurement, common chemical and physical facts, environment and basic technology.

Urdu grammar and vocabulary, translation, plus simple analytical reasoning and awareness of office and Punjab-government terminology.

4-week study plan for the PPSC Assistant paper

Two subjects a day, one revision block at night, timed papers in the final week.

    Week 1 — English & Urdu

Work through tenses, prepositions, voice and narration rules with MCQ practice, then add 20 vocabulary and 10 idiom items daily. Cover Urdu grammar and translation in short sessions.

Week 2 — Pak Studies, GK & current affairs

One page of notes per topic: Pakistan Movement milestones, constitutional dates, geography, and a rolling list of appointments, agreements and sports events from the last year.

    Week 2–3 — maths & everyday science

Drill percentages, ratios, averages, profit/loss and time-and-work mentally. Pair each maths session with a short everyday-science topic — both are formula-and-fact recall.

    Week 3 — computer literacy & Islamiat

MS Office features, shortcut keys, hardware terms and internet basics. Islamiat is high-yield recall: Seerat timeline, pillars, Khilafat and key dates.

Week 4 — timed full papers

Sit 100 MCQs in 90 minutes with negative marking applied to your own scoring. Review every wrong answer the same day and revise only from your error log.

    Throughout — attempt strategy

Aim to attempt 85–92 questions confidently rather than all 100. With negative marking, disciplined skipping usually beats full attempts.

    Practise the PPSC one-paper test

Tabir Academy's PPSC and government-jobs preparation covers the full one-paper syllabus with past-paper style MCQs, subject drills, computer-literacy sets, current affairs updates and timed mocks scored with negative marking.

  • Frequently asked questions

What is the PPSC Assistant syllabus?

One 100-mark MCQ paper of 100 questions in 90 minutes: English (~20), general knowledge and current affairs (~15), Pakistan Studies (~15), Islamiat (~10), mathematics (~10), computer literacy (~10), everyday science (~10) and Urdu with basic analytical and office awareness (~10). PPSC publishes the exact syllabus with each advertisement.

Is there negative marking in PPSC one-paper tests?

Yes. PPSC deducts a fraction of a mark for each wrong answer in its one-paper MCQ tests, so blind guessing lowers your score. Attempt questions where you can eliminate at least two options and leave the rest.

What are the passing marks for PPSC Assistant?

The qualifying mark is generally 40%, but selection is competitive against district and category quotas — successful candidates usually score far above the qualifying line, often in the 60–75% range depending on the cycle.

What qualification is required for Assistant BS-16 in Punjab?

A second-class Bachelor's degree from a recognised university, with Punjab domicile and an age band that is typically 21–30 years plus the usual relaxations. Confirm against the current advertisement.

Is there a typing test for PPSC Assistant?

Assistant BS-16 usually has no typing test. Junior Clerk BS-11, Stenotypist and Steno-Typist posts do include a typing or shorthand speed test after the written paper, with the required words-per-minute stated in the advertisement.

How many marks is the computer portion in the PPSC paper?

Around 10 marks, covering MS Office basics, hardware and input/output devices, storage units, operating systems, internet and email, and shortcut keys. It is the fastest section to secure full marks in.

How long should I prepare for the PPSC Assistant test?

Four to six focused weeks is realistic for a graduate: English and Urdu first, then Pakistan Studies, general knowledge and current affairs, then maths, science and computer literacy, finishing with a week of timed full-length papers.

Are PPSC Assistant past papers available?

PPSC does not release complete past papers, but it publishes the syllabus and sample pattern with each advertisement, and the topic mix repeats closely across Assistant, Junior Clerk and other one-paper posts. Practising past-paper style mocks built on that same syllabus is the closest available preparation.
