LUMS LCAT Preparation Guide 2026

LCAT is LUMS's own admission test and, for most Pakistani applicants, the cheaper and faster route than an international test. Here is what it measures, how each section behaves, and how to prepare for it without guesswork.

  • Section-by-section pattern
  • LCAT vs SAT decision
  • Reading & quant practice
  • Target exam

    LUMS Common Admission Test

LCAT and SAT are alternatives, not additions — you submit one. Applicants to the school of science and engineering may also face subject-specific requirements, so read your programme's page before you choose.

  • For: Undergraduate admission to LUMS
  • Sections: Reading comprehension, English writing, Quantitative reasoning
  • Format: Computer-based, strictly timed
  • Alternative: SAT accepted in place of LCAT
  • Held: In LUMS's own admission cycle each year
  • Who should take LCAT?

Decide between LCAT and SAT before you spend months preparing for either.

    Education

FSc, A-Level, IB or an equivalent qualification. Applicants awaiting final results can apply and submit results later within LUMS's stated deadline.

    LCAT vs SAT

LCAT is designed for the local applicant pool, costs less and is held in Pakistan. Take SAT instead only if you already have a strong score or are applying abroad as well.

    Programme fit

Business, humanities, social sciences, law and science and engineering all read the same test score, but each programme weighs your academic record differently.

    One shot per cycle

LCAT is offered within the admission cycle window, so unlike SAT you cannot re-sit repeatedly. Prepare to peak on the scheduled date.

    How the LUMS application works

The test is one component of a file that is read as a whole.

    Online application

Create your LUMS applicant account, select your school and programme, and choose LCAT as your test option while completing the form.

    Sit the LCAT

Appear on your scheduled slot. The test is computer-based and heavily time-constrained, especially the reading section.

    Supporting documents

Submit transcripts, your personal statement and any programme-specific requirements. The personal statement carries real weight — do not write it the night before.

    Holistic review

LUMS reads your test score alongside academic record, statement and activities rather than admitting on a single cut-off number.

    Offer, financial aid and joining

Accept your offer, apply for the National Outreach Programme or need-based aid if applicable, and complete enrolment.

LCAT sections and what they actually test

LCAT is a reasoning test, not a syllabus test. Content recall matters far less than reading speed and clean arithmetic.

Long passages with inference, tone, main-idea and detail questions. Reading pace is the single biggest score driver.

Grammar, sentence structure, concision and word choice in context — rules-based and highly trainable.

Arithmetic, algebra, ratios, percentages, basic geometry and data interpretation at school level, tested for speed.

Most candidates who underperform knew the material but ran out of clock. Practise complete sections, not loose questions.

    How to prepare for LCAT

Eight to ten weeks of focused work is enough for most applicants.

    Read long-form English daily

Thirty minutes of dense non-fiction — editorials, essays, science journalism — raises reading speed more than any shortcut technique.

    Learn the grammar rules cold

The writing section repeats a finite set of rules: modifiers, parallelism, punctuation, pronoun clarity, concision. Master those and the section becomes free marks.

    Rebuild mental arithmetic

Quant is school-level but calculator-light in feel. Drill fractions, percentages and ratios until they are instant.

    Always practise timed

Untimed practice hides the real problem. Do full sections under the clock from your first week so pacing becomes a habit.

    Review every mistake in writing

For each wrong answer note why the right answer is right. Patterns emerge within two weeks and they are usually fixable.

    Write the personal statement early

It is read by humans and it differentiates similar scores. Draft it while you prepare, not after the test.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is LCAT?

LCAT (LUMS Common Admission Test) is the admission test LUMS conducts for undergraduate applicants. It assesses reading comprehension, English writing and language, and quantitative reasoning rather than a school syllabus.

Should I take LCAT or SAT for LUMS?

Both are accepted and you submit one. LCAT is usually the better choice for applicants studying in Pakistan because it is held locally, costs less and needs no international registration. Choose SAT if you already hold a strong score or are also applying to universities abroad.

What subjects are tested in LCAT?

There is no subject syllabus. LCAT tests reading comprehension, English writing and language conventions, and quantitative reasoning at school level — all under tight time limits.

How long should I prepare for LCAT?

Most applicants need eight to ten weeks of consistent work: daily reading practice, grammar rule drills, quantitative sets and weekly timed full-length papers.

    Is LCAT difficult?

The content is not advanced, but the pacing is demanding. Candidates who practise complete timed sections rather than isolated questions score noticeably higher.

Does LUMS admit on test score alone?

No. LUMS reviews applications holistically — your test score sits alongside your academic record, personal statement and activities, which is why a strong statement genuinely matters.

    Can I retake LCAT?

LCAT is offered within the LUMS admission cycle, so retake opportunities are limited compared with SAT. Plan your preparation to peak on the scheduled test date.

How do I improve reading speed for LCAT?

Read one dense non-fiction article daily and summarise each paragraph in a few words before moving on. Speed comes from holding structure in your head, not from skimming — practise timed passages with four to five questions each rather than isolated questions.

What maths topics should I revise for LCAT quantitative reasoning?

Arithmetic and number properties, fractions, percentages, ratios and proportion, basic algebra and equations, simple geometry, averages, and data interpretation from tables and charts. The level is school maths; the challenge is speed and accuracy.

How many practice passages should I do each week for LCAT?

Around ten to twelve timed passages a week during preparation, with a written review of every wrong answer. Patterns in your errors — inference versus detail, tone versus main idea — usually appear within two weeks and are fixable.

How should I study English grammar for LCAT?

Work rule by rule rather than question by question: subject-verb agreement, modifiers, parallelism, pronoun clarity, punctuation and concision. Once the rules are automatic, the writing section becomes the fastest part of the paper.

Is a calculator allowed in LCAT?

Plan to work without calculator dependence: the quantitative questions are designed to be solvable with clean mental arithmetic and rough work. Confirm the current instructions on the official LUMS admission pages before test day.

What is a good LCAT preparation timetable?

A workable weekday pattern is 45 minutes of reading practice, 30 minutes of grammar drills and 45 minutes of quantitative sets, with one full timed paper plus a review session at the weekend.

Does the LUMS personal statement affect admission?

Yes. Because LUMS reviews applications holistically, the statement is what separates candidates with similar scores. Draft it while you are preparing for the test and revise it over several weeks rather than writing it at the deadline.
