ECAT is as equally important for engineering students as MCAT is important for medical students. Therefore, to clear any confusion in minds of Tabir blog readers related to ECAT, we have this blog here. Following are the most frequently asked questions in regards to ECAT:
Students can apply for ECAT either online by filling in the form provided on the website of UET or they can visit the offices of the university.
The syllabus of ECAT includes all the syllabus of F.Sc and A-Levels from HSSC books. The syllabus for the subject English varies from university to university though.
ECAT is further divided into two categories which include the engineering group and the computer-science group. The ECAT conducted for the engineering group is based upon the subjects Physics, Chemistry, English, and Mathematics. While the ECAT taken for the computer-science group is based upon four subjects which are Computer Science, Physics, English, and Mathematics.
The format of ECAT is Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) based. The total number of questions is 100. The division of MCQs for each subject is as follows:
The total time allowed for ECAT is 100 minutes or 1 hour and 40 minutes. You have roughly one minute to solve each question.
The answer to this question is YES. There is a negative marking of -1 for each incorrect answer.
Following are the essential documents that candidates need to submit along with the application form:
The eligibility criterion is that the candidate should have passed the Intermediate Examination in the Science Group of Pre-Engineering. The passing marks should not be less than 60% which is 660 out of 1100.
Foreign students that have been passed out of any foreign examination board can take ECAT. The requirement is that the candidate should have studied the subjects of Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics at their Intermediate level.
The ECAT is valid only for that current year or session. The result is considered null after that year.
ECAT is conducted only once a year.
No, ECAT can be given multiple times but only once a year just like the MCAT.
ECAT is conducted in almost all big cities of Pakistan. Students are advised to give the ECAT in their nearest center so they can reach at least one hour prior to the exam. Following are the several centers for ECAT conduction:
An attested copy of the Resident Visa of the candidate’s parent or guardian, by the Pakistani Embassy of that country and Employment Certificate (on Form-VIII) issued by the Pakistani Embassy, of the parent or guardian residing in a foreign country. The Form-VIII is downloadable from the official website or office of the University of Engineering.
The key to passing ECAT is to focus on the concepts. Rote learning is not going to work for the entry test as it is MCQs based. The students would have to modify their preparation methods. They should focus on their textbooks and practice regularly from past papers. Time management practice is essential to pass the test.
We have compiled questions from past papers of all subjects relevant to the ECAT. Have a look at some of the following Physics related questions you will be tested on whether you are coming from any background; pre-engineering, pre-medical, ICS or stats. These questions are designed to help you get an idea of the exam.
Explanation:
This is so because the velocity of all electromagnetic waves are the same. The velocity is 3x10^8 m/s. Hence, 3x10^8/3x10^8 = 1/1 or 1:1.
Explanation:
For geostationary satellites, orbits have properties such as their eccentricity and inclination being 0 degrees, and their orbit period being 24 hours long.
Explanation:
Charles’ Law states that the volume (and hence, temperature) will be high where the density is low. Hot air being less dense will move towards the ceiling, which would make the temperature of the ceiling (T2) be greater than the temperature close to the floor (T1).
Explanation:
The pendulum will move or vibrate if the bus decelerates or accelerates. However, when the bus moves with a constant velocity, the pendulum will remain stationary.
Explanation:
We know that,
Acceleration ‘a’ = Δv/t
Force ‘f’ = ma, or a = f/m
Hence,
f/m = Δv/t
m = f/t x Δv
m = 5/5 x 5
m = 5
Now that you have an idea of what kind of questions appeared in the ECAT past papers, you know what to expect. To practice such questions similar to these from ECAT past papers and to improve your concepts, enroll at our course and start your preparation right away!
There are no restrictions for appearing in the ECAT. However, simply appearing in the test does not give students the right to apply for Engineering or Engineering Technology institutions of Punjab.
- The ECAT will be offered in the following combinations:
- Candidates having qualified their DAE will have the option to choose between:
(1) Physics, Mathematics, English & Chemistry;
Or
(2) Physics, Mathematics, English & Computer Science

The Exam is designed to test students on the concepts that they have studied at intermediate level. It comprises MCQs only, where each MCQ carries 4 marks. For each wrong answer 1 mark would be deducted. If the student doesn't attempt a question, then they would get a zero for that. In short
Correct answer = 4 Marks
Wrong answer = -1 Mark
Not attempted = 0 Mark
Love it so far and will use it on regular basis
