The students who wish to take admission to the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore in Pakistan for the degrees of BE/BS engineering have to take The Engineering College Admission Test (ECAT) conducted by the above-mentioned university. Some other universities also have the requirement of ECAT.

1. How can I apply for ECAT?

Students can apply for ECAT either online by filling in the form provided on the website of UET or they can visit the offices of the university.

2. What is the syllabus of ECAT?

The syllabus of ECAT includes all the syllabus of F.Sc and A-Levels from HSSC books. The syllabus for the subject English varies from university to university though.

3. Which subjects are included in ECAT?

ECAT is further divided into two categories which include the engineering group and the computer-science group. The ECAT conducted for the engineering group is based upon the subjects Physics, Chemistry, English, and Mathematics. While the ECAT taken for the computer-science group is based upon four subjects which are Computer Science, Physics, English, and Mathematics.

4. What is the ECAT pattern?

The format of ECAT is Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) based. The total number of questions is 100. The division of MCQs for each subject is as follows:

• 30 MCQs for Physics
• 30 MCQs for Chemistry/Computer Science
• 30 MCQs for Mathematics
• 10 MCQs for English

5. How much time is allocated?

The total time allowed for ECAT is 100 minutes or 1 hour and 40 minutes. You have roughly one minute to solve each question.

6. Does ECAT have negative markings?

The answer to this question is YES. There is a negative marking of -1 for each incorrect answer.

7. What are the documents that are needed to apply for ECAT?

Following are the essential documents that candidates need to submit along with the application form:

• Copy of the computerized B-form or if 18 above, the copy of computerized original CNIC from NADRA.
• Copy of detailed mark sheet.
• Copies of all the passed certified degrees or diplomas including HSSC/F.Sc, A-Level, 12th Grade, or any other equivalent qualification.
• Attested domicile of the candidate with a recent picture.
• Six recent passport-size pictures.
• Copy of an equivalence certificate provided by the IBCC in case of students holding equivalent foreign qualification (A-Level or 12th Grade).

8. What are the eligibility criteria for appearing in ECAT?

The eligibility criterion is that the candidate should have passed the Intermediate Examination in the Science Group of Pre-Engineering. The passing marks should not be less than 60% which is 660 out of 1100.

9. Can foreign students apply for ECAT and what is the criterion?

Foreign students that have been passed out of any foreign examination board can take ECAT. The requirement is that the candidate should have studied the subjects of Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics at their Intermediate level.

10. What is the validity duration of ECAT?

 The ECAT is valid only for that current year or session. The result is considered null after that year.

11. How many times ECAT is conducted in a year?

ECAT is conducted only once a year.

12. Can ECAT only be given once?

No, ECAT can be given multiple times but only once a year just like the MCAT.  

13.  Where is ECAT conducted?

ECAT is conducted in almost all big cities of Pakistan. Students are advised to give the ECAT in their nearest center so they can reach at least one hour prior to the exam. Following are the several centers for ECAT conduction:

• The University of Gujrat.

14. Which documents are required by the foreign students to apply for ECAT?

An attested copy of the Resident Visa of the candidate’s parent or guardian, by the Pakistani Embassy of that country and Employment Certificate (on Form-VIII) issued by the Pakistani Embassy, of the parent or guardian residing in a foreign country. The Form-VIII is downloadable from the official website or office of the University of Engineering.

15.  How to prepare for ECAT?

The key to passing ECAT is to focus on the concepts. Rote learning is not going to work for the entry test as it is MCQs based. The students would have to modify their preparation methods. They should focus on their textbooks and practice regularly from past papers. Time management practice is essential to pass the test.

Explanation:

This is so because the velocity of all electromagnetic waves are the same. The velocity is 3x10^8 m/s. Hence, 3x10^8/3x10^8 = 1/1 or 1:1.

2. What will be the inclination of the orbit for geostationary satellites?

1. 0 degrees
2. 45 degrees
3. 90 degrees
4. 30 degrees

Explanation:

For geostationary satellites, orbits have properties such as their eccentricity and inclination being 0 degrees, and their orbit period being 24 hours long.

3. A few minutes after turning on the air conditioners in a big hall, the temperature is measured on a hot day during summer. Taking the temperature close to the floor as T1, and temperature close to the ceiling as T2, which of the following is true?

1. T1>T2 because of Charles’ Law
2. T1<T2 because of Charles’ Law

Explanation:

The Paper pattern for ECAT UET is as follows:

The Exam is designed to test students on the concepts that they have studied at intermediate level. It comprises MCQs only, where each MCQ carries 4 marks. For each wrong answer 1 mark would be deducted. If the student doesn't attempt a question, then they would get a zero for that. In short
